New Jersey to Allow Adoptees Access to Birth Records

Posted At: 09:25:00 AM | Posted By: Admin

The New Jersey senate voted yesterday to allow adoptees access to their birth records. This bill will overturn what was set in 1940, which closed all adoption records. The senators that commented on their decision to vote yes mentioned that the majority of adopted persons are trying to find the roots to their medical history.

The bill passed with a 26-12 vote. According to the Star Ledger, the 12 senators who voted no felt that they would be breaking the guarantee to the birthmothers that their privacy would remain intact after their closed adoptions took place. No date has been set for the bill to take effect at this time.
